Cowberry Crossing Farm

branding | packaging design
One product that Cowberry Crossing Farm sells locally are duck eggs. The farmers are committed to local, humane, sustainable farming, with a certification for an organic and biodynamic farm. The project was to create packaging for packs of four (4) duck eggs with these factors in mind:
  • protection on display and for transport from farm to farmer's markets and local stores
  • branding
  • environmentally friendly practices
  • unique packaging solution

While researching material to create a new logo that reflected this farm's mission, the reasons for their commitments inspired my final logo design. It is mentioned on their website, that the farmers at Cowberry Crossing Farm believe the earth is a living being, and that every individual's actions have an effect on the whole. Their biodynamic farming practices emphasize achieving harmony and balance between all living things.

The template for the packaging is nearly the size of a letter sized paper (8.5" x 11") and consists of simple folding techniques and very functional business cards. The cards, when folded and secured down on both sides, add extra security to the structure. They can be removed along a perforated edge to keep and the other to give. All printed information about the duck eggs and the farm are printed on one side of medium weight chipboard. Assembly also requires absolutely no adhesives, just folds, and interlocking pieces.

For transport and display, the handles would not yet be folded down in order to allow the bottoms of the packaging to sit securely on top of each other. The compact, square-shaped footprint of each folded package allows these stacks to be packed right next to each other with minimal wasted space.

When fully folded, the consumer can view the contents well from multiple perspectives. The shape also subtly resembles the shape of a barn for an added touch of uniqueness and brand personality. The business cards that fold down are actually what form the space for a handle for easy handling and consumer transportation. To remove an egg, just unlatch the top securing it. Even with all but one egg left, the packaging structure will remain standing. Finally, when the time comes to dispose of the packaging, it is easily recyclable.
