Forest Hills Gardens

flip & guide book
Among the many diverse neighborhoods of NYC to design a neighborhoods guide for, I chose Forest Hills Gardens, New York City's garden city. The guide book had to have a strong point of view and unlike a standard tourist guide.

Picture
After observing Forest Hills Gardens and the surrounding area thoroughly, the stark differences along its perimeter made this neighborhood stand apart. The characteristic British Garden City modeled homes and pristine street conditions contrast with the very busy commercial shops along the street. What separates these different environments is the Long Island Railroad, with either side accessible at various paths under the elevated tracks.

The first few pages introduce the reader to the area's history.

The line on the map was drawn after following a grainy old image of the neighborhood's district borders, and after walking along that border in person to identify the exact lines to mark.

The characteristics of Forest Hills Gardens are very prominent and cohesive, from the street lamps to the style of home. They are very distinguishable from the street lamps and buildings that surround the neighborhood.
Picture
After learning about the neighborhood, the reader can experience the stark differences with two flips of the book. Beginning with a view along Austin Street, the page shows the the starting point that will be seen and the path it takes, and is instructed to flip through to the back page.

When the end is reached, as shown on the back cover, the adjacent page indicates the start of the view along Burns Street. After flipping through to the end of Burns Street, the reader will have seen the contrast with the flip of these pages.
Check out the informational spreads to get more acquainted with this Garden city.
